The Shigakukan (士学館) headship, held under the succession-name Momoi Shunzō (桃井春蔵; furigana もものい), was one of the three great Edo dōjō (江戸三道場) alongside the Genbukan and the Renpeikan. The name was carried by four masters of Kyōshin Meichi-ryū (鏡新明智流). A bare “Momoi Shunzō” almost always means the fourth holder, Naomasa, under whom the school recovered from decline and won its lasting reputation for kurai (位; poise) — “poise, that is Momoi.” The individual holders are told apart by imina (諱): Naoyoshi (直由) → Naokazu (直一) → Naoo (直雄) → Naomasa (直正).

The house

- Opened by the founder at Nihonbashi Minami-Kayaba-chō (日本橋南茅場町) in 1773; relocated to Tsukiji Asari-gashi (築地蜊河岸) by the 2nd holder. One of the Edo san-dōjō (江戸三道場) with the Genbukan (玄武館) and Renpeikan (練兵館).
- Kyōshin Meichi-ryū (鏡新明智流)
- Originally written 鏡心 (Kyōshin, after the Toda-ryū iai form "Kyōshin"), later changed to 鏡新; both forms persist. Same reading, differing kanji. Composite: the founder studied Toda-ryū (戸田流), Ittō-ryū (一刀流), and Yagyū-ryū (柳生流) and added new swordwork; the school page also associates Muhen-ryū (無辺流) and Shinkage-ryū.
Sequence & numbering
Standard order is 直由 → 直一 → 直雄 → 直正. The Nipponica entry appears to conflate generations, naming Naomasa's teacher "the 3rd, Shunzō Naokazu (直一)," whereas 直一 (Naokazu) is the 2nd and the 3rd is 直雄 (Naoo). This is likely the same conflation behind the "桃井春蔵直一〔?〕" flagged in the Fujiwara-book transcription.
The founder Naoyoshi (直由) never bore "Shunzō"; his tsūshō was Hachirōzaemon (八郎左衛門). "1st Momoi Shunzō" is a retroactive scholarly label; the myōseki proper begins with the 2nd, Naokazu.
